Mobile Mapping

GeoCue Corporation offers turn-key solutions for post geocoding processing of Mobile Mapping System (MMS) data. Mobile mappers combine multiple laser scanners, digital cameras and positioning systems to collect precise point cloud and image data from an earth-based (land or water) moving platform. Mobile Mapping Systems often offer complementary or alternative solutions to airborne laser scanning. These platforms provide data at much higher densities and accuracies than fixed wing or helicopter airborne systems. They also allow scanning of structures that are obscured from airborne platforms such as the underside of bridges, tunnels and corridors passing under heavy vegetation.

Implementing Your Power Line Extraction Workflow in GeoCue and TerraScan

A market of significant economic value for LIDAR operators is mapping the “bulk electricity transmission system”. This is the system of components (towers, wires, etc.) that interconnect the various electrical power generation facilities and, ultimately, distributors of electricity. Accurately knowing the wire catenaries for line re-engineering and identifying possible encroachments (danger trees) is an extremely high priority for the utility companies. Historically LIDAR has proven to be a very cost-effective method for collecting field data to accurately map these structures. However, post-processing of the LIDAR point cloud data is required to extract features such as wire catenaries for further analysis in dedicated line engineering CAD packages such as PLS-CADD™. Deploying our GeoCue workflow management software suite, in conjunction with Terrasolid’s TerraScan software tools for extracting the wires and towers from the LIDAR point data, is the most cost-effective solution for building a scalable, efficient power line data processing and project tracking production system.

GeoCue Workflow Management:

  • Automated, detailed project tracking including the critical “who is doing what”, “what has been done so far” and “how much time is it taking compared to my budget”.
  • Fully automated production history logs for record keeping and auditing.
  • User-customizable workflow checklists for proprietary workflow implementation.
  • Direct integration out-of-the-box with Terrasolid’s TerraScan software.
  • User-configurable integration with third-party tools such as PLS-CADD or the user’s proprietary software.
  • Web-based Project Dashboard for summary reporting and status tracking by managers or offsite clients.

TerraScan Power Line Tools:

  • Automated point classification tools for preparing the LIDAR point data (ground, above ground features, potential wire returns).
  • Automated detection, classification and vectorization of wire catenaries into the design file.
  • Tools for automated determination of attachment point locations.
  • Wireframe tower modeling.
  • Encroachment (danger tree) detection and reporting based on user-specified clearances.
  • Output reports to pass power line and catenary data to software packages such as PLS-CADD.
